Talking About the Carbon Cult

A few months ago, YouTuber Aly Drummond, who livestreams under the name of RealFemSapiens, invited the Brosoomians of Deimos Station onto her channel to talk about tonic masculinity:

I was a little worried about how that would go. Having seven outspoken and argumentative contrarians on one livestream, no matter how charming our shepherdess, seemed like a recipe for anarchy.

And yet, it went quite well. It turns out that all of us are mature enough to save up whatever responses we want to make until it is our turn to speak, without shouting over one another no less. Aly’s livestream audience seemed to really enjoy the discussion, with remarks like ‘based’ and ‘I can’t believe how well they’re tying all of this together’ gracing the chat.

That got us thinking that perhaps we should make this discussion a regular thing. So for the next little while we discussed it without doing anything, until finally Grant Smith, using all of the 5GW leadership tricks at his disposal, bullied and cajoled us into getting off our asses and actually doing it. Grant is also the absolute mensch who’s handling the administration on the various platforms.

For our first episode, we discussed the carbon cult. By ‘we’, to be specific, I mean Grant in addition to Mark Bisone , Daniel D , Harrison Koehli , L.P. Koch , and of course myself. Doctor Hammer was too busy mixing woad in his garage or something.

Most of the time with this topic, dissidents spend their energy refuting the central claims of the carbon cultists - that the Earth is getting a fever, or that its fever is at a dangerous level, or that the fault for the feverish planet can be laid solely at the feet of our exhalations. One rather wishes the Extinction Rebellionistas would take their own prescription seriously enough to hold their breath like petulant teenagers until the fever breaks.

But as it turns out, none of us actually believe these fairy tales, and pointing out that they are fairy tales is, at this point, boring. So instead we did a deep dive into the subject of why people believe all of this - the philosophical, spiritual, cultural, economic, and political drivers behind the cult’s popularity.

YouTube wasted no time in giving us the censor’s stamp of approval, which was affixed to our first video within hours (minutes?) of its having gone up.

Before linking the discussion itself, I’d like to take the time to mention that we’ve decided to open the live discussion to the public. The paying public, that is. If you’re a participant in our fast-growing community of disputatious wyrdlings at Deimos, you can hang out with us every Day of the Sun as Apollo’s chariot reaches its zenith over the Eastern seaboard. Which is to say high noon EST. Not only can you listen in as we stumble over our tongues in real time, but you can pose questions and make remarks of your own which, if we like them, we’ll even read. It’s like superchats but cheaper.
