The way I see it, on one end of the genetic spectrum there is inbreeding. Everyone agrees that this is a disastrous genetic outcome. On the other end of the spectrum, at best, there is a rich genetic mix, intelligence (if selection is done well), resistance to unfavorable recessive gene-driven diseases and manifestations. At worst, it is another story. But it is always another story at worst.

Eugenic breeding is the happy compromise. No inbreeding, as after all recessive disorders degrade the genome; but breeding partners must be carefully selected for compatibility and quality.
Icelandic studies indicate that the sweet spot, for fertility at least, happens around the third cousin level.
I have no problem with intelligent breeding based on quality, compatibility and free choice to create a robust, loving family unit. There are intangibles like scent which operate in the background to signal compatibility. The thing just goes on its own steam under the right conditions (culture).
I think culture needs to consciously chosen to encourage the right breeding patterns. Our modern Western culture is highly dysgenic and will come crashing down because of it.
